    The Russians were first to do satellites when they launched Sputnik, a round orb the size of a grapefruit attached to some needle-looking spikes, so to speak.

    The U.S. started launching this rocket at Cape Canaveral to fight back once they realized the Russians did it first.

    Luna 1 was launched in 1959, and was supposed to orbit around the Moon, but it failed, and instead went even farther into space. Knowing this battle, though, that was probably a good thing.

    Korolev, the engineer and space designer of the Soviet space missions from the space race, died from a operation for hemorrhoids. The operation was poorly performed.

    Despite the death of Sergey Korolev, the Russians successfully launched Luna 9 and it was the first spacecraft to softly land on the Moon.
