The U.S. started launching this rocket at Cape Canaveral to fight back once they realized the Russians did it first. -

Luna 1 was launched in 1959, and was supposed to orbit around the Moon, but it failed, and instead went even farther into space. Knowing this battle, though, that was probably a good thing. -

This was the first time America sent a monkey to space. They did this later in 1961 to prevent Russia from winning with Yuri Gagarin. -

Luna 2 was more ambitious than the first Luna, and was meant to land on the moon. It did, and it was also the first object sent from man to land on the moon. -

John Glenn launched to orbit Earth in Friendship 7 to retaliate again against the Russians. -

By the end of 1962, NASA's plans for putting the first twelve humans on the moon were planned. -
Korolev, chief of Russian Space Race, dies.
Korolev, the engineer and space designer of the Soviet space missions from the space race, died from a operation for hemorrhoids. The operation was poorly performed. -
Luna 9 is the first to achieve a soft landing.
Despite the death of Sergey Korolev, the Russians successfully launched Luna 9 and it was the first spacecraft to softly land on the Moon. -
Accident at Apollo
A launch test for Apollo's first rocket killed three astronauts(Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee from a cabin fire on Apollo 1. -
Apollo 8 launches with a most clever idea.
Apollo 8 was, and still is the first human capsule-like spacecraft to leave Earth's orbit, reach the Moon, orbit the Moon, and land back to Earth safely. The crew was Time's Men of the Year for 1968. -

Apollo 11 launches with the first men to be on the moon in it, and everyone hopes for the best. -
Neil Armstrong successfully lands on the moon.
Neil Armstrong, along with Buzz and Collins' help, successfully lands on the moon, and calls it "one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind". With this mission, the Americans officially beat the Russians at the Space Race.
