Environmental timeline

  • Dust Bowl

Severe dust storms due to drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods.
This period is significant because it forced families to leave their homes and farmlands.
FDR implemented plans to conserve soil and return the ground to ecological balance. He is an ecocentric becuase hes looking to restore the grouds for the good of man and the US
  • Minimata DIsease

Two girls were experiencing toruble walking talking, and also colvusing. It is a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisining. The mercury was dumped by a chemical company.
This event is significant because thousands of people have died from this sudden debilitating disease.
Chisso was the company responsible for the spill they would be considered technocentric becuase they are concerned with technology instead of the environment
  • Silent spring

    Silent spring
A book by Rachel Carson showing the harmful effects of perspires on the environment and particularly on birds.
This book is significant because it showed the negative effects the pesticide has.
Rachel Carson is anthroprocentric because she was encouraging the stop of pesticide use and particularly DDT by publishing her book and showing the negative impacts we have on the earth.
  • Marine Mamal Protection Act of 1972

The First U.S Act to protect the ecosystem. The act prohibits the taking of marine mammals, and enacts a temporary prohibition on the import, export, and sale of any marine mammal within the United States.

I think this act is significant because it marked the first of many acts that heped to conserve the environment and particulaly marine animals.
FIlms like the Cove helps eposes the abuse of marine animals specifially dolphins, it is Anthropogenic because they want people to help the dolphin
  • Chernobyl Disaster

    Chernobyl Disaster
At the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine under control of the Soviet Union, an explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread to most of Europe.
This event is significant because it spread large quantities of radioactive material to most of Europe.
The Chernobyl Shelter Fund made efforts to provide funds to protect the population and environment from Chernobyl effects so the fund would be considered Anthropocentric.
  • Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker headed for California, struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef and spilled 11-38 million gallons of crude oil into the water.
This event is significant becuase gallons of oil was put into the water severely effecting the wildlife.
Since it was in navigational waters, the coast gaurd had authority on clean up. They started the cleanup with cemicals and then with hot water. The coast guard could be considred ecocentrism b/c they were concerned about the environment
  • Electric Car Revival

CARB pushed car companies to make cares close to zero emissons. In response companies produced fully electric cars.
This is a significant event becuase having cars that produce 0 emissons will decrease the carbon pollution in the air.
CARB would be considrered technocentric becuase they think these cars will help the environement.
  • Kyoto Protocol

Calls for participating parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This is significant becuase this Protocol calls for multiple different nations to come together to help slow down global warming.
The Un is incolced with this protocol. This is an anthropocentric value system becuase the Protocol is calling for people and countries to take resposibility andreduce greenhouse emmisons.
  • Fukushima meltdown

    Fukushima meltdown
In Japan, a earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
This event is significant because the nuclear radiation leaked into the ocean effecting the animals local to Japan also radiation was spreading through the jet streams and water currents.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company is working to clean up the power site. They would be considered a technocentric because they're focused on the technology aspect of the environment (I.e nuclear energy)
  • Hurricane Sandy

Super storm Sandy was the second worst coastal hurricane recorded. It effected 24 states and severly effected New Jersey and New York. The Damage costs amounted to around $65 billion.
This event is significant becuase it shows that hurricanes are starting to enter areas that are not used to these natural desasters.
Rebuilding Together is a organization that repairs the homes of those effected by Sandy, in this way they would be considered Anthropogenic b/c they want people to help others.
