IB past and future

  • Spanish added as an official IB language

IB expanded its reach beyond just English and French speakers for the first time
  • IB DP Online courses

Starting in 2004, students could be offered a wider arrange of courses. This is extremely beneficial to smaller schools who previously were unable to offer a full allotment of courses
  • 3000 IB World Schools

The pace of schools adopting the IB curriculum has been expanding at an accelerated rate
  • Mandarin added as an IB Language

As Mandarin is the most frequently spoken language in the world, it seems likely that the language would be added. However, the question will be adoption. I've been teaching in China / Hong Kong for 10 years now and I know the Chinese equate the education they provide as national security. Taiwan would be sure to adopt it but if many schools in mainland China started to adopt a curriculum which is developed and controlled overseas, they could block it.
  • IB courses online for anyone

Massive online courses, like Coursera and Khan Academy are becoming more and more popular. I could see the IB program offering lessons to anyone, in an effort to make the world a better place. I'm guessing it will be free to take the lessons but there will be a fee if students are able to take a test and get a certificate.
  • 10,000 IB World Schools

The growth rate is increasing and the only question is when the 10,000 threshold will be reached.
