Awards
Hacking was awarded the Smiths Prize in 1960. This prize is awarded bi-annually to graduate research students in scientific fields. Additionally, he was awarded the Gregg Bury Prize in Theology.

The Logic of Statistical Inference
Hacking's first publication, The Logic of Statistical Inference, explains some of his mathematical theories. "Statistical Inference comprises the application of methods to analyze the sample data in order to estimate the population parameters."

Contributions to Philosophy
Hacking, in his major works; The Emergence of Probablilty (1975) and The Taming of Chance (1990), identified probability with the mathematics of randomness and chance. Stating that probability is dual, an epistemic element, and an ontological aspect.
