Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon Bonaparte of France convinced Spain to return the Louisiana Territory in hopes of building an American Empire. America wanted to purchase Louisiana from France because they felt that France would control the midcontinent and force America into an alliance with Britain. Napoleon sold the territory to America for $15 million which doubled the size of the country. -
War of 1812
Madison decided to go to war against Britain - American military was unprepared for war - many Native American tribes teamed up with Britain in hopes of continuing British aid and stopping US expansion - the US navy couldn’t stand against the blockade - by 1814 the British burned the Capitol, White House and other public buildings - British and American diplomats ended in the war in 1814 by signing the Treaty of Ghent which declared peace -
Indian Removal Act
The act authorized Jackson to negotiate with the Indians in the Southern United States for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their homelands
