How to solve a difficult math problem

  • Understand what the question is asking

Understand what the question is asking
Break down the problem into bite-size pieces. Are there any elements you do understand? Separate these from what is confusing. Try using a variety of manipulatives to answer the question (blocks, counters etc). You can even draw out a picture if you're a visual learner. Ask for clarification if needed.
  • Review your answer

    Review your answer
Once you have finished your calculations, check your answer using whatever means available. Have your teacher, friend or parents go through your work with you and explain how you came to the answer you did. If you were correct, great job! Could you solve a similar problem? If you were wrong can you identify what you did incorrectly? What do you need to change? You may need to review step 1 and 2 again before you can answer the question correctly.
  • Solve the question!

    Solve the question!
Now that you have isolated what you do understand vs. what you don't understand, it's time to begin your calculations. Use a calculator if necessary, or grab your pencil, paper and eraser and put in some hard work. Work through the problem step by step, starting a new line for each new calculation. Always show your work so you can explain your answer later! Stay organized and write neatly. As always, seek help if needed for clarification.
