    They were men, women and children captured and sold to slave traders, forced on to ships, and
    kept in appalling conditions for the long journey to the Americas. Some of the first Muslims in
    America were slaves taken from Africa. In 1768, a slave named Charno, who lives in South Carolina,
    transcribes four suras, or chapters, from the Quran.
