Mars' Literacy Timeline

  • Eric Carle's Books

    Eric Carle's Books
I started reading Eric Carle's book when I was around 3. I would read many like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? to the point where my mom got me a good collection. I would read them (or at least try to) to my family.
  • Spanish Books

    Spanish Books
My mom did not want her kids to stop learning how to speak and talk in Spanish. She wanted to keep that heritage going for a long time. She went to the store and brought home some books for me and my brother to read.
  • Scholastic Fairs

    Scholastic Fairs
My first book fair was in 1st grade. It was one of the most exciting moments any student could imagine. I think it is the most common experience when kids started to like books. Before the school day, I would ask my mom for money to purchase books and an extra pencil.
  • Minecraft Guides

    Minecraft Guides
I became a huge geek at the game Minecraft. When my cousin lived with my family, he got the copies of the game guides. It was sort of past my reading level but I still dedicated my time to learn what was written in it. My favorite book was the one to create new builds such as houses and rollercoasters.
  • Animal Plushies

    Animal Plushies
I loved making up stories with my stuffed animals with my friends at school. They would go on so many adventures with the power of our imagination. I did not want my plushies' memories to go to waste so I kept a small journal to write in. I ended up finishing every page filled with many stories.
  • Wonder

    Wonder
In 4th grade, our class had to read the book Wonder by R.J Palacio. I did not like reading large books at the time, especially without pictures. In the end, our whole class ended up enjoying it and got so intrigued with the story. We all waited to see what came next and volunteered to read the next section ourselves.
  • Computer Books

    Computer Books
During silent reading time, we were introduced to a website. On it were many types of books for us to read. It was easy to access so I sometimes even read at home. During class, I would try to find something new and learned new subjects and topics.
  • Mrs. Plumey's History English Class

    Mrs. Plumey's History English Class
History was never really my strongest subject. I was a little terrified on what I was going to learn in case if I did not understand. I ended up loving the class and the interesting subjects that came with it. Because I wanted to learn more about the events I was learning, I kept reading. It also taught me how to annotate my readings more.
