Coloring Story Books
Ever since I was born my mother has worked in education. She would always buy me these coloring books that were based off of stories and she would read them to me and let me color them.
I feel this was a way she eased me into reading and understanding the concept of text. -
Brown Bear
This was the very first book I ever read to my grandma. After this and seeing how proud she was of me reading I wanted to read more and more to her. This encouraged me to read and I can see it also being a little flame for other students as well. -
Harry Potter
My father read the series out loud to my sister and me every night. Having him read to me encouraged me to listen, to guess what would happen next in the text. -
Family Tree
I remember in the sixth grade my teacher had us research information about where are families were from and what events they went through. This assignment required me to read text on where my parents and their parents were from, what war they fought in and write their life stories. -
Magic Tree House Series
When I was in the third grade, as a whole class we would read this series. It was our jobs to keep on track because once a week our teacher would read a chapter out loud as we followed along. It helped me build responsibility on finishing reading all while enjoying the text. -
Dear Dumb Diary
Some of my favorite texts I enjoyed reading were those I could relate to. This series was relatable to me because it was about a girl writing in her diary, talking about her life at home and at school. -
Reading Logs
Mr. Thomas really advocated reading. He would tell us that you could do it anywhere and make time for it. He said it didn't matter what we read, as long as we were reading and working out our brain. He gave us a log to fill out every week and too keep up with it because if you didn't it would show that you weren't exercising your mind. -
Recycled Books
My mother read all the time. She would suggest books for me to read all the time and since my mom enjoyed them I was more than eager to read them and enjoy them with her. -
Open Literature Night
We were asked to find a piece of text that really touched us and that we would like to share with the rest of school. I remember I chose a Native American poem about family and I was so happy to share it with my peers and teach them how I felt families should be represented as. -
Growing up through Text
As I got older my mother gave me books she found important for me to read. I was a teenager and she would give me books like "Go Ask Alice" and "Speak". She wanted me to really feel these experiences through books to really think about my decisions.
