Cambodia Gains Independence
Cambodia finally breaks free of France's hold on them. They gain independence. It has been over 150 years since the French had a hold of the Cambodians. It's been almost 50 years since they have been independent. -
The Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK)
The CPK is out to overthrow King Sihanouk. He named the group Red Khmer because he didn't take their group seriously. -
Armed Rebellion
The CPK fell back to Phnom Penh and gathered peoplefor an armed rebellion. -
Banning Families
The Red Khmer group bans all families and relationships to be together. -

A local High School is turned into a prison. Many people are sent here. 1975 through 1979 around 17,000 traitors will be sent here and tortured, then executed. -
The Four Year Plan
Red Khmer wanted to seize all private property so they can make everyone work in rice fields. Soon the people would die of starvation or dehydration. -
Angka
Red Khmer thought it would be best to rule in secrecy. Angka controls Cambodia at the time. Then Saloth Sar, or Pol Pot introduces himself on a radio broadcast. -

Pol Pot targets all communists dissidents and moderates. -

Carter declares the Khmer Rouge "The worst violator of human rights in the world". -

After Phnom Penh falls the PRK is established with vietnamise support. -

Vietnamese forces take over Phnom Penh then the Khmer Rouge regime ends. Pol Pot continues to lead the Khmer Rouge until 1997. -

Ta Mok Charged
Ta Mok, former Khmer Rouge commander, is charged with crimes against humanity. -
Cambodia and the UN
Cambodia comprimises with the UN. -
