The Hot Air-Balloon
The hot air balloon was the first flying machine. After it was built others tried to think of ways to improve it. The hot air-baloon gradually became thinner, which became the kite, then the hang glider, and finally turned into the airplane. -
The Hang Glider
Many different people had tried and failed to make the hang glider for over a thousand years before the inventor Sir George Cayley. He achieved in being the first sucessful human glider. After Cayley died, others worked on perfecting his idea until it was safe enough to become a relatively safe sport, like it is today. -
The Wright Brother's Airplane
The Wright Brothers idea of the airplane has changed the world. Now we are able to get futher in shorter amounts of time and see places in ways mankind were never able to before. The airplane led to the ideas of other flying machines such as the Fighter Plane, Jet, Helicopter, and more. When Orville and Wilber saw Stan Barret's rocket car the two bought one of the models and had the idea to atatch wings to it's engine and were then inspired to invent the modern airplane. -
The Passenger Plane
The first passenger plane, named the Ilya Muromets, took a round-trip from St. Petersburg to Kiev in 14 hours and 38 minutes with 16 people aboard. The passenger plane has become the most popular type of transportation for long distance traveling. Now we are able to get places we most likely would have never been able to if the passenger plane hadn't been invented. -
The Fighter Plane
The Fighter Plane was first invented to help observe the battlefield below. Now we also use it for air-to-air combat against other planes. The Fighter Plane became an amazing help to us in WWI. -
The Helicopter
The first helicopter was invented by Igor Sikorsky in 1939. He dreamed of making a "single rotor vehicle flight craft". After perfecting his machine people were amazed how the modified airplane was able to hover and deal with all sorts of things other people were trying to solve involving twisted objects and lift. -
The Paper Airplane
The Chinese invented the paper airplane over 2000 years ago. But others beleive that it was Leonardo Di Vinci's idea as well. They believe that he created the paper airplane while he was working on the designs for his ornithopter.
*The paper airplane should be the first one on the timeline, but because we couldn't use BC as a year we put in 2000 because it was invented 2000 years ago.
