He established the Lunatic Asylum in Worcester and chaired the board of trustees. -
Common School Journal
Mann started the Common Weekly Journal for teachers. It focused on public schools and their issues. His six main principles were:
1. The public should not remain ignorant
2. The public shout pay for, control, and maintain education
3. This education should be provided in schools that embrace diversity
4. This education must be non-sectarian
5. This educaiton must be taught using tenets of free society
6. This education must be provided by well-trained, professional teachers -
Secretary of the Board of Education
He was appointed secretary of the nation's first board of education in Massachusetts. -
Germany
He traveled to Germany to study the German Education System and returned to the US. When he returned he lobbied for the adoption the Prussian Model school system. -
Lectures on Education
In 1845 Mann published a book called 'Lectures on Education'. -
President of Antioch College
He was nominated for governor of Massachusetts, but after losing the election he accepted the position of presidency at the newly established Antioch College at Yellow Springs, Ohio. -
Backing Prussian Education System
In 1852 he backed the decision to put the Prussian School System into place in Massachusetts. After the system was adopted the New York governor put it in a trial run for 12 schools in New York. -
