In 1609, Dutch merchants sent ships across the Atlantic Ocean
and up the Hudson River to trade for furs with the Native Americans. -
Bacon's Rebellion
1675, a war hapened between natives and settlers over land.
Settlers led by Nathanial Bacon rebelled because of Berkley's lack of help.Settlers killed Natives and got rid out Berkley. Bacon died because of disease and this ended the rebellion. It was a wake up call for government’s relations with the people. -
King Philip's War
Indian rebellion happened called King Philip’s War. Metacom, who was also called King Philip planned and led the rebellion. Indians destroyed New England settlements, destroying 12 towns. Because of the colonies counterattacks, the rebel Indians started to starve because of destroyed crops. Metacom then died in battle. He got shot by a praying town Indian .The defeated Indians lost the remaining of their lands. Some Indians fled north. Indians got revenge by attacking New England's frontier. -
Albany Plan of Union
The Albany plan of union, drafted by Benjamin Franklin was dropped by both the colonists and Great Britain. The plan called for the colonies to unite under British rule and cooperate in times of war. -
Pontiac's Rebellion
Indians captured forts and raided settlements. Chief Pontiac of Ottawa organized the attack on Detroit and the British named these uprisings after him. -
Proclamation of 1763
This document was meant for peace with native Americans but was a failure.This document ordered colonial settlers to remain east of the Appalachian Mountains. The document could not protect Indians as the British soldiers proved to be to few for the many colonists continuing to want to push west. -
Stamp Act and Boycott
Stamp Act Congress in 1765. The consumers boycotted imported British goods.Stamp Act repealed in 1766 due to the economic pressures. -
Virginia Resolves
"Resolved therefore, That the General Assembly of this
colony, together with his majesty or his substitutes have,
in their representatives capacity the only exclusive right
and power to lay taxes and imposts upon the inhabitants of
this colony; and that every attempt to vest such power in
any other person or persons whatever than the General

Boston Tea Party
Angry members of the Sons of Liberty went aboard 3
British ships and dumped tea into the Boston
Harbor 1773. Over 340 chests got destroyed, which was almost $2 million in today’s money. They were dressed up as Native Americans to show the feeling of no longer being British, but American. -
XYZ Affair
Americans were sent by Adams to negotiate peace but the French demanded bribes and Adams cut off negotiations. -
Alien and Sedation Acts
The Alien Act authorized the President to arrest and deport non-citizens who criticized the federal government. -
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Written by Jefferson and Madison in 1798 and 1799, the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions declared the Sedition Act unconstitutional. The resolves even hinted that states had the power to nullify federal laws that were unconstitutional. -
Army Reduced
Congress reduced the size of the army. It also passes an act, which is signed into law by Jefferson, establishing an official United States Military Academy at West Point. -
Louisiana Purchase
President Jefferson Purchases Louisiana for 15 million. This effectively double the nations land. -
12th Amendment
The twelfth amendment was added due to the election of 1800. This made a separate vote for president and vice president. -
Tariff of 1816
This tariff increased the price of imported goods by 20 to 25 percent. The inflated price for imports made Americans want to buy products made in the United States. The tariff helped industry, but hurt the farmers who had to pay higher prices for the goods. -
US gets Florida
The American pressure and Adams’s diplomacy persuaded Spain to sell Florida to the United States. Spain felt pressured to give up claims by the First Seminole War that occurred in 1818.American General Andrew Jackson led a force into Florida to fight the Seminoles and seize Spanish forts. -
James Monroe Reelected
James Monroe won reelection as president. He received almost all of the electoral votes cast and a feeling of nationalism swept the nation. -
Ireland Potato Famine
The Irish potato famine caused the population if Ireland to decrease by one fifth. Many Irish immigrated to the US. -
Baltimore Riots
Riots in Baltimore between Catholics and protestants.
