The First Opium Wars Begin as China tries to stop the Britan of bringing opium into China because too many people are becoming addicted to opium and it was destroying the social structure of China. The battle took place near Canton (now its called Guangzhou). -

Treaty of Nanking signed by China and then Hong Kong was Rented to Britain to help stop the first opium war. The British wanted Hong Kong because it had a sheltered harbour where their ships could moor. -
