    Before the first world war, the Saar belonged to the Germans. Due to the fact that Germany lost the war, one of the terms of the treaty of Versailles was that the Saar would be given to France. The Saar was a German region that was rich of coal fields, and it was one of Germany's most resourceful pieces of land, however the treaty stated it had to be given to France for fifteen years.
