Thomas Jefferson was appointed by Congress to write the Declaration of Independence after Richard Lee proposed this idea to parliament. When it was signed, it was the colonist's way of saying they officially sever ties from Britain. Link text -
La Scala was built
The famous opera venue was built in Milan Italy. It hosted many famous classical composers like Verdi, Callas, Rossini, etc. It opened in 1776, and is still used to today for preformances. -
Battle of Yorktown is over
This marks the final battle in the revolutionary war. After nearly two weeks of battle, the British except defeat and surrender to the American army. George Washington and his troops defeated 9,000 British troops, and two years later the Treaty of Paris was signed recognizing American Independence. Link text -
Violin Virtuoso Paganini is born
Paganini was a master of the violin and composed the 24 caprices for solo violin, which inspired many composers. He used bowing techniques that were unseen at the time. Such as, bouncing the bow on the strings and left-hand pizzicato. Link Text -
Chopin was born
Chopin was a Polish composer who was known for his contributions to the romantic era, especially in piano. He was a virtuoso, and he is created almost all of his pieces for the solo piano. Chopin composed 20 nocturnes, 25 preludes, 17 waltzes, 15 polonaises, 58 mazurkas, and 27 etudes. He wrote the famous funeral march melody, and his arguably most famous piece was Nocturne in e flat major, op 9 no 1. Link text -

This classical music era was host to famous composers like Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin who were famous for their performances of their own pieces, especially piano concertos. Many composers in this era came from Russia, England, France, Denmark, Finland, Hungary. Indian Removal Act is passed
This President Jackson's act that forced the natives to relocate from the south to reserves in Oklahoma. During the 2,200 mile trek on foot, many of the natives died due to disease. [Link text](Trail of Tears History Alive) -
The Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which allowed freed African Americans to join the Union and fight to keep the south apart of the Union/abolishing slavery. At the end of the Civil War, almost 200,000 Black soldiers had fought for the Union. Link text -
The Battle of Gettysburg
This battle was the bloodiest in the civil war leaving 11,000 dead/mortally wounded. The battle ended with a Union victory and stopped the Confederates from invading the North. Link text -
The 13th Amendment to the Constitution is passed
The 13th Amendment formally abolished slavery after the Union victory in the Civil War. This was passed by President Lincoln and was the first in the 3 amendments in the reconstruction for the rights of African Americans Link text -

Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture first performed
Tchaikovsky based this score on Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. This is one of Tchaikovsky's most famous works. He didn't compose his music based on the order of events in Romeo and Juliet, but he presents a variety of moods/characters throughout the movements. Link text -
Franz Liszt dies
Franz Liszt was a Hungarian pianist during the classical music era. He had an enormous influence over classical music and was known for his originality. His most famous works for the piano include La Campanella, Liebesträume, and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. -
Book of the Hanging Garden is published

The Treaty of Versailles is signed
This was a Treaty that marked the end of the first world war (though it is thought to have started the 2nd). It assigned the blame on Germany and imposed enormous taxation on the country. The Treaty also greatly decreased the country's military, land, and military weapons, thus leaving Germany humiliated and impoverished. Link text -
Rhapsody on the Theme of Paganini is completed
Sergei Rachmaninoff completed the piano works based on famous Nicolo Paganini's 24 caprices for the solo violin. These pieces are technically demanding and popular. Link text -
Shostakovich's 5th Symphony debut
Russian Composer Dimitri Shostakovich wrote this symphony about Stalin's reign of terror (mass executions, poverty). He was heavily scrutinized because he was a threat to Stalin. The USSR had banned all traditional composers except Bethoveen. Link text -
D-Day
When the allied forces planned to invade the beaches of Normandy and get passed the German defenses in order to be put in the path of a direct siege of Germany (and Berlin). It allowed them to infiltrate into Europe, which started the demise for Germany. -
Truman announces the Truman Doctrine
President Harry S. Truman addresses Congress about assisting Greece and Turkey resisting communism. It states that they (United States) must contain the USSR's expansion of communism.
