Duplessis and La Grande Noirceur
in 1933 the Union Nationale was elected to rule Quebec and its leader was Premier Maurice Duplessis. This lead Quebec into an era called La Grande Noirceur. This era gave birth to french nationalism. Quebeckers were in awe for their leader for he appeared to be fighting for them. However, there was great corruption going on. Duplessis decided to increase power to the church when it came to education. This caused Quebec to be very religuous -
Richard Riots
The Richard Riots is when a famous French hockey play named Maurice Richard was suspended for the season because he had a scuffle with a player and hit the linesman. This made french furious because they thought it was because he was French. This was the first of many protests for nationalism and equality from the french. -
The Quiet Revolution
The Quiet Revolution occurred after Duplessis death. The Union Nationale lost power and the Liberal Provincial Government came to power being lead by Jean Lesage. Many changes came to Quebec. The church lost its power and control over the schools returned to the government. The government also improved social and economic standards of Quebeckers by getting rid of corruption.This Revolution unfortanitly also gave brith to sepretisim. -

Charles De Gaulle gave a speech in quebec Expo 67 saying he supports the sepretisim movement and he dropped the quote "Vive le Quebec libre." A famous quote for Quebec independance. This made the desire for independance freater then ever in quebec. -

The Offical Languages Act was made by PM Pierre Trudeau which stated that Canada would be made a bilingual country and that french wiulkd be a offical language of Canda. this made the desire for independance reduce in Quebec. -

Referendum #1
The First Referendum to decide if Quebec should go independent was held. Pierre Trudeau made many promises to Quebec if they stayed like cutting ties with the British and making Canada indpendant. This also created a confederation for Canada -
Referendum #2
The second referendum was held for Quebec independence by Lucien Bouchard. The referendum ended with Quebec staying in Canada.
