Bonnie and Clyde
Throughout 1932 and 1933 Bonnie and Clyde traveled around committing robberies, thefts, and murders. In January 1934 they freed prisoners in the Eastham State Prison Farm by attacking the guards. FBI gathered evidence and followed their trail for months. In may 1934 police open-fired on them and they were killed immediately. I chose this because i thought it was interesting to learn about them because you always hear their names and not what they did. -
Black Sunday
This was one of the worst storms in American History. It turned day into night. It covered Eastern New Mexico, Colorado, and Western Oklahoma. Many people suffocated because the dust filled their lungs. I chose this because it was the biggest storm in American History. -
First all sound version of "Show Boat"
This film was created by Universal Pictures. They were not satisfied with it and wanted to make it an all sound film. It was scheduled to be made in 1934, but an actor was accidentally killed and they began making it in 1935. It was released in 1936. I chose this because it was a hit film and the story behind it is full of drama. -
Auschwitz Camp
The gate of this camp says, "Arbeit Macht Frei," which means, "work makes one free." At the time it was the largest of its kind. The camp had 3 main camps. All forced prisoners to do labor and one also served as a killing center. I chose this because it was once the biggest and its interesting to know what went on back then and that they actually had places like this. -
Lend-Lease Act
This act promoted the defense of the United States. This was a program that supplied allied nations with oil, food, weapons, and other materials. It ended in 1945. I chose this because it was an important act that kept us out of the war. -
Killing operations begin at Chelmno
It was an extermination camp that used gas to kill Jews, mostly Polish. Prisoners were taken there by train and told they would be treated fairly. They were asked to undress and give up their valuables & then taken into the forest by a gas van which suffocated them.I chose this because its interesting to know what went on at these camps and how the people were treated. -
Aqualung
The aqualung was invented sometime between the winter of 1942 and 1943 by Jacques Cousteau and Émile Gagnan. It is a breathing device for scuba diving and helped them to more easily explore underwater. I chose this because without it people wouldn't be able to scuba dive or explore underwater without it. -
Slinky
Richard James accidentally invented the slinky in 1943. He was trying to make springs to keep sensitive ship equipment steady at sea when a few of them were knocked off the shelf and "walked" instead of falling. Sales were slow at first but soared by Christmas 1945. I chose this because the slinky is still being bought 73 years later. -
Silly Putty
Silly putty was invented by James Wright on accident. At the time the allies were desperately short on rubber and needed to make a synthetic version with readily available materials. James mixed boric acid and silicone oil, making the first Silly Putty. It was first named "Nutty Putty." No one could find a use for it, so for 6 years it was passed around and played with at cocktail parties. It caught Ruth Fallgatter, a toy store owners, attention and started being sold. I thought this was cool. -
Killing operations end at Chlemno
The Nazis destroyed it in 1944 and ordered for all mass graves to be dug up and the bodies cremated because they wanted to erase all evidence of mass murder. On January 17, 1945, the Nazis murdered the 45 remaining prisoners. I chose this because its interesting to know what went on at these camps and how the people were treated. -
