African American revolutionary party, founded in 1966 in Oakland, California, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panther purpose was to patrol African American neighbourhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. -
Robert Kennedy's Assassination
On June 5, 1968, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was fatally shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, shortly after winning the California presidential primaries in the 1968 election, and died the next day while hospitalized. -

Protest in Washington, DC
In Washington, D.C. nearly 100,000 people gather to protest the American war effort in Vietnam. More than 50,000 of the protesters marched to the Pentagon to ask for an end to the conflict. The protest was the most important sign of wanting U.S. support for President Lyndon Johnson’s war in Vietnam.

President Nixon finally Resigns

The CDC published a Mortality Weekly Report describing cases of a rare lung disease in five gay men in Los Angeles. All the men have other unusual infections as well, indicating that their immune systems are not working; two have already died by the time the report is published. This edition of the MMWR marks the first official reporting of what will become known as the HIV and AIDS outbreak.
