  • Roanoke was established

    Roanoke was established
    John White set off to Roanoke, which was an island off North Carolina. He sailed back to England in 1586 and then returned to become mayor of Roanoke,bringing more than 100 people with him.
  • English Colonies

    English Colonies
    Fleet of ships sent by Phillip the 2nd, the spanish king to invade England and restore Roman Catholicism. England began directing its resources toward establishing colonies after the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
  • Roanoke Colony Fails

    Roanoke Colony Fails
    In 1587, John White was forced to sail to England to get supplies for the Roanoke colony. White was delayed and did not return until 1590. When he came back nobody was there .
  • John Smith establishes Jamestown

    John Smith establishes Jamestown
    Jamestown was the first succesful english colony. Jamestown endured terrible hardships. Many became ill because they drank the water from the river. When people came to Jamestown they searched for gold instead of building houses and growing food.
  • Jamestown Grows

    During January only 38 people were alive. Later on that year John Smith took control. That same year 800 more english settlers arrived.

    Only 60 of of the colonists remained alive. Powhatan stopped trading food with the Jamestown settlers. The settlers started eating rats, mice, horses, and snakes. They also started eating each other.

    Cultural differences put these two groups on a collision course. The Powhatan traded goods with the english. When more settlers arrived more land was taken from the natives which made them fight.

    In 1619, the first African Americans arrived in Jamestown. The population rose up from 600 in 1619 to about 2,000 in 6121.

    Uneasy Peace with Powhatan Tribes.
    Since the english were taking land from the Powhatan tribes. The Powhatan decided to fight back. In 1622, in the response to land grabs the Powhatan killed hundreds of Jamestown residents.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    English fought the natives for land. One fourth of free white men were former indentured servants. Colonists who did not own land fought the natives for land. Nathaniel Bacon and a group of followers complained about taxes. Bacon also wanted war against the natives for land. He didn't get what he wanted so he burned down Jamestown. This is what started Bacon's Rebellion.
