  • Naturalization Act of 1798

    Naturalization Act of 1798
    Increased the amount of time neccessary for immigrants to become naturalized citizens from 5 to 14 years. This was meant to protect national security
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    The Civil War lead to an overall transformation of the nation and the way Americans looked at political issues. Women had to play a bigger role in the economy. Immigrants fought and died for the union cause. This encouraged ethnic tolerance in the North. The Civil War proved that the national government was supreme to the states on matters affecting the common good. This new standard plays a role in issues involving immigration today.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    1862- Homestead Act- settlement of the west by providing free land to settlers- transcontinental railroad. This will later cause some friction as they move into Mexican and Native American Territory.
  • Reconstruction

    Reconstruction
    Reconstruction: Resembled the struggle with immigration today because it was a time of trying to figure out a system that worked among all races and classes.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    1866: 14th amendment: Abolished slavery and granted full citizenship to blacks, prohibited states from denying equal protection under the law. This affects immigrants of today who are granted citizenship. They are given full citizenship rights.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    15th amendment: states couldn’t deny right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. This also will be effective as Mexican immigration has increased because they can enjoy this same right.
  • Mexican Revolution

    Mexican Revolution
    The Mexican Revolution drove many Mexicans out of their home land and into the United States.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram
    Zimmerman Telegram: Secretive message from Germany to Mexico saying they could regain Arizona if they aided Germany in the war. This was intercepted and translated. This increased the American frustration and tension rose.This destroyed trust between the two countries. Mexico still is viewed with hostility.
  • U.S. Border Patrol Established

    U.S. Border Patrol Established
    Congress passed the Labor Appropriation Act of 1924. This established the U.S. Border Patrol for the purpose of securing the borders. This has a huge effect on immigration and immigration control.
  • Social Security Act

    Social Security Act
    Social Security Act: 1935: Agricultural and domestic workers were left out (colored or women). This can connect with immigration because it is not given to illegal immigrants and legal immigrants. They must contribute to the economy to get their social security. Illegal Immigrants who may contribute to the economy illegally do not receive Social Security.
  • Pacific War

    Race War vs. Conflict of Ideologies: Enemy is an entire race, rather than ideas (what they stand for); Hierarchy of race. This ties to immigration today because it taught Americans that it's okay to see an entire race as the enemy. Today, people tend to express issues with the Mexican race, rather than the issue of illegal immigration. The mentality spreads to the entire race.
  • Right to Work Laws

    Many Americans moved to Arizona during the war and were encouraged to work and support a union. Mexican workers made less money than Americans. This creates an attitude of superiority to the Mexican workers.
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    Opened way of desegregation for American public school.This affects schools and immigration today because public schools have a variety of races and ethnicities and all the students are allowed to work alongside one another.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    Central High School in Little Rock: governor threatened to have national guard at the school to keep blacks out, whites tried to keep nine blacks out of the school, Eisenhower took us military forces and deployed them to little rock. These guys escorted the students. So students could get an education (LITTLE ROCK NINE). This time showed major change in the way the nation viewed race equality. This is effective in immigration today because all people are able to enjoy the freedom of an education
  • War on Poverty

    War on Poverty
    President Johnson declared war on poverty in 1964: Not successful, Medicare, Medicade, food stamps. This has created tension with Americans and immigrants because Americans feel that these immigrants use up these resources, as well as other similar ones.
  • SB 1070

    SB 1070
