A Railway leading to confederation
-Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia wanted to link railways
-A railway linking the colonies was needed to increase trade and to move troops
-In winter they needed the railway to move troops and trade with colonies, because the water freezed -
Charlotte Town Confrence
-In 1864, delegates from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were wanting to come together to discuss the possibly of creating a Maritime Union.
-They Maritime colonies decided to meet together to hold their own meetings in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island starting on 1864. -
Quebec Confrence
-The Quebec Conference was the second conference leading to creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867.
-Following this conference, the delegates from the colonies created the Quebec Resolutions. -
Reciprocity treaty
-there was free trade between the BNA colonies and the United States under the Reciprocity
-people in colonies of BNA began to think of joining together so they could trade amoung themselves with no tariffs -
London Confrence
-Once New Brunswick and Nova Scotia had passed union resolutions in 1866
-The purpose was to draft the text of the British North America Act
This was also when they decided on the name 'Canada -
The British North American Act
-The British Parliament passed the British North American act on March 29th, 1867
-This act established the provisions of the Confederation of the Province of Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into having a federal system including parliament which was similar to Britain.
-Established divisions of power were made between the central parliament and the provincial legislature. -
British North American colonies come in to confederation [Canada Day]
-The four provinces join confederation
Canada East and West, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick
-Sir John Alexander Macdonad becomes first prime minister of Canada because of his contribution to confederation -
Manitoba and North West Territories join confederation
-Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory were bought by Canada, and the area was renamed the Northwest Territories
-When the Canadian government got Rupert's Land, the North-Western Territory the Metis were afraid that they would lose their rights.
-If they had their own government it would be easier to keep their way of life. -
Bristish Columbia joins confederation
-the colonie owed alot fo money, and they knew they can get some help from Cananda
-Many people in British Columbia and Ottawa was scared the United States might try to take over the colonies
-If they entered Confederation this would stop, as the colonies would then be part of a larger country. -
P.E.I joins confederation
-the Island had borrowed a lot of money to build a railway, and could not pay back, so Canada agreed to help them pay this money
