    The Underground Railroad was a network of individuals that aided runaway slaves in their attempt to find freedom. The Underground Railroad increased the tension, because it encouraged slaves to runaway and escape.

    The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state in order to keep the balance between pro slave states and non slave states. Missouri compromise decreased tensions, but was not a permanent solution and did not succeed.

    Nat Turner's slave rebellion was the largest slave rebellion in american history and played a huge role in the anti slave movement. The slave rebellion increased tensions, because it was a large slave rebellion and this did not bode well for southern slave owners.

    The Texas Annexation was the introduction of Texas into the United States of America. The Texas Annexation decreased the tension, because it united the people into expansion in a new state and opened opportunity in the west.

    The Compromise of 1850 allowed popular sovereignty and amended the the fugitive slave act, which abolished the slave trade in Washington D.C. The Compromise decreased tensions between the two, but was not a permanent solution.

    John Browns raid was an attempted slave revolt to capture a United states arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, but was unsuccessful. John Browns raid increased tension between the north and south, because it raised awareness to the underlying desire for the abolition of slavery in the north as well as the south.
