Imperialism
Imperialism is when a powerful nation siexes power outside its own boarders transforming and governing them as a colony. In the 1900 many countries owned territories, the main ones being Great Britian, France, Russia & Germny. Britian by far had the largest empire and as more areas became coonized the race for territory became very competitive. -
Natinalism
Natinalism is the desire of independent nations for dominance and prestige, as the great powers raced for more territory to colonize, natinalism causes competitorsto become rivals fueling tension between countries. -
Alliance 1879-1907
The assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand ll was the event which sparked ww1. Instead of the assasination leading to war between just two countries, allies cause about 10 other countries to become involved as well. Austria-Hungry declared war on Serbia, Serbia's treaty with Russia now involved them and brought in their ally France, who also is allied with Britian and her many colonies which include: Austrailia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Union of South Africa and Japan. -
Militarism 1900- 1914
MIlitarism was present between Germany and Britian. Germany's Kaiser William ll was very envious of Britian's powerful army and navy. The tension between countries which lead to world war 1 began with the preparations and stock piling of weapons and building of stronger armies and naval fleets. -
The assasination of archduke Ferdinand the ll and his wife Sophie
Ferdinand and his wife were touring in Sarajevo, Bosnia i an open car when a serbian natinalist Nedjelko Cabrinovic threw a bomb at their car and it rolled off the back wounding an officer. Later when Ferdinand went to go visit the officer, they had taken a wrong turn and one of Cabrinovic's cohorts 19 year old Gvrilo Princip saw an opertunity and shot at the car killing both Ferdinand and Sophia within the hour. -
Germany's blank check to Austria-Hungary
On July 5, 1914. Germany's kaiser Whelim had a meeting with Austria-Hungary's ambassador and was informed of Ferdiand's death. Feeling an almost personal lost giving they had just meet nearly two weeks prior, he was enraged and offers his countrys full support represented by the blank check. -
WW1 begins
WW1 begins and Ausrtia-Hungary gives Serbia an ultimatum; to either try to destroy the terrorisr groups & allow for further investigation on Ferdinand's death or face war. When Serbia appealedte deal they then turned to Russia for help, as promised they began mobilizing but once Germany found out they then declared war on Russia. Germany attacked Russia's ally ,France, through Belgim violating their nuetrality and bringing Great Britian into the war. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
A German submarine torpedoed and sank the Lusitainia, a british boat coming from America going to England. Of the 1,900 passangers aboard about 1,100 dissapeared of those 120 of them were American, bringing the US into the great war. -

A letter from a German Ambassador to to Mexico propossing a Mexican-German alliance to overthrow the United States. -
Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare
After attacking the Lusitainia and other American merchant ships President Woodrow Wilson decided to send a letter to the German demanding that they stop attacking unarmed merchant ships. By September 1915 the germans had their warning a reined in the Uboat attacks, until german naval commandores kept pushing the importance of uboat attacks. After persuading thhe Kaiser that the uboats were a major key to Germany's victory it was announced that unrestricted warfare would begin Feburary 1, 1917. -
US entry to the the war
Germany announced the resumption of unrestricted warfar, saying they will open attack on any ship in war zones. One month later Germany announced that they sink a private American vessel William P. Frye. President Wilson was ooutraged and later went to congress to propose declaring war on Germany and their allies. -
effects of WW1
There were about 120,000 americans killed and 200,000 wounded out of the 4,355,000 deployed. The former empire of Austria-Hungary was dissolved and new nations were created from its land; Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia,Yugeslavia and the Ottoman turks had to give most of their land and kept only the country, Turkey. -
The treaty of Versailles
THis was one of the peace treaties that came out of WW1, it ended the stateof war between Germany and the allied powers. The treaty resigned German boundaries, and assigned liberty for reparations after strict renforcement for 5 years France made modifications and Germany agreed to pay repreations under the Dawes and Youngs plan. -
Dawes plan
Charles G. Dawesthe Chicago banker, former directer of the bureau of the budget. The Dawea plan proposed that Germany's annuel reparation payments would be reduces and increase over time as its eonomy improved, though the full amount to be paid was left undetermind. -
Young's Plan
Chairman Owen D. Young the head of General Electric, a member of the Dawes. He proposed a plan that reduced the total repremations demanded from Germany down to 29 billion dollars payable over the next 58 years. After the Germany failed to pay the Dawes plan the Young plan was formed to lower the total demanded from germany and remove the last of the troops occuping German soil. -
Great Depression
The great depression began in 1920 for farmers because there wasnt a high enough demand for all their produce and the acuired a lot of debt during the war on purchasing more land and tractors to help them grow more food for the war. The stock market crashed in 1929 due to poor banking in america along with credit being destroyed after the stock market crashed leaving an outrageous economical gap.
