Imperialism
Imperialism is when a more powerful country or nation, rules over smaller colonies. The country or nation can get this colony by fighting for it and if the colony surrenders, then they can take it. This started World War 1 because many countries fought for these colonies and some colonies did not want to be apart of something else. -
Alliances
The 6 major powers of Europe were split into two alliances. The first one was the Triple Entente which was Britain, France, and Russia. Germany, Austria-Hungrary, and Italy were in the Triple Alliance. These two split alliances would help their side of countries if help was needed. -
Nationalism
Nationalism is loyalty towards a country. They stand up for their country and do whatever they can. This was a cause for World War 1 because Nationalists do anything for their country. Whether its for provocative speeches or going into war. -
The Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie.
On June 28, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were visiting Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. The people who threw bombs at them were called the Black Hand. -
WWI begins
World War I began in 1914 after the assignations of Franz Ferdinand. The Central Powers, Germany, Austria-Hungrary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States which were the allied powers. Because of advanced military technology, the War started really quick and by the end, more than 16 million people were dead. -
Germany's blank check to Austria
Austria requests to meet Germany to talk about concerns with Russia. Kaiser Wilhelm, which was Germany's emperor pledged that if Russian troops advanced Austria's, then he will smooth things over diplomatically. This is referred to Germany's blank check because it never happened. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
In 1915, a German boat sunk a British luxury boat, the Lusitania killing more than 1000 people and 128 of them were American. After this, a promise was made to end sea warfare but soon after Germany did it again. -
Zimmerman Telegram
The Zimmerman Telegram was written by Arthur Zimmermann. He was a German ambassador writing to Mexico. They wanted Germany to be apart of their alliance to check up on America. For this, they would help Mexico to get a significant part of financial aid. Mexico did not agree and they passed this information on too America. This was a cause for World War I because America and Germany had problems. -
Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare
After the sinking of the Lusitania, countries made a promise too restrict submarine warfare. Germany accepted the agreement but soon crashes another ship and kept going. This caused World War I because countries got mad at Germany for doing this and wanted war. -
US entry into the war and her impact on it
President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany on the seventeenth of April in 1917. This happened after Germany did not apply the rule of submarine warfare. Germany bombed another ship and America decided that it was time for war. -
Effects of WWI
By the end of World War I, 16 million Americans died. Factories and homes were not destroyed, but workers started working much more because essentials were needed after war. Wages became much less. Austria became its own country. Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia became new countries as well. -
Militarism
Militarism is a philosophy that places great importance on military power. Germany started militarism. Those who had this philosophy meant that their governments were ruled by strong military forces. Military was one of the reasons it started World War 1 because the governments were more focuses on fighting and the military than agreements and negotiations. -
Rise of Hitler
Hitler was in the political field for a long time. When the president died, he took over and became president. He spoke about all his plans and then started doing them. -
Treaty of Versailles
World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany agreed to pay reparations and much more. -
Great Depression
The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn. It wiped down millions of investors. The causes for The Great Depression were the economic rapid increase and then an even faster decrease. -
Dawes Plan and Young Plan
The Dawes plan was the plan that Germany had to do in order to pay all reparations for the War. And the Young plan was the second plan.
