Archduke Ferdinand (heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne), and his wife Sophie, were shot to death after avoiding a car bomb, by Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary calls for arrest of the Black Hand leaders
After the murder of Archduke Franz, Austria-Hungary demanded the arrest of the 3 main leaders of the Black Hand, but Serbia said it would break their constitution to hand them over. This eventually led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia.

On this date, Germany declared war on France, and a few hours later France declared war on Germany. Both countries begin readying their troops. -
Britain declares war on Germany
Germany's troops march into neutral Belgium, causing anger in many countries, especially Britain who declares war on Germany. In the next 10 days, Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia and France and Britain declare war on Austro-Hungary. -

Interception of the Zimmerman Telegram
