    France and Britain signed an entente. It is not as formal as a treaty, it had led to close military and diplomatic ties.

    Overseas rivalries was another reason for the division of European Nations. Competition for colonies brought France and Germany to the brink of war in Mcrocco. Germany later gained some territory in Central Africa.

    Russian armies pushed into eastern Germany. Next, Ruussains suffered a disastrous defeat at Tannenberg, causing them to retreat back into Russia. Russia was poorly equipped to fight a modern war.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife sophie are assacinated by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip while they were visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia.
    -Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
    -Germany declares war on France.
    -The United Kingdom declares war on Germany, after Germany invades Belgium.

    Germany declares a "war zone" around Great Britain, essentially effecting a submarine blockade where even neutral merchant vessels were to be potential targets. Next, the Dardanelles Campaign begins.

    A German submarine torpedoed the British liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. Almost 1,200 passengers were killed, including 128 Americans. Germany justified the attack, arguing that the Lusitania was carrying weapons. The lusitania had then sank.

    The Battle of Verdun begins. The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of World War I and was one of the bloodiest.

    The British intercepted a message from the German foreign minister, Arthur Zimmermann, to his ambassador in Mexico. Inside the note Zimmermann would help Mexico "to reconquer the lost territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona" in return for Mexican support against the U.S.

    Fourteen Points to peace
    President Woodrow Wilson issues his Fourteen Points to peace. Russia signs the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, which is a peace treaty between Russia and the Central Powers.
  • Western Front Final War

    There was a final war on the Western Front. The Germans wanted to have a major victory before the eager American troops arrived in Europe. The Germans got a new government which sought an armistice with the Allies. At 11 a.m on November 11, 1918, the Great War at last came to an end.
