The Rockette's began kick lining and performing famously in the 1920's, lead by chief choreographer Russell Markert. Since the start, Russell wanted a very specific goal and image of his Rockettes, which still remains today. It started with just 16 beautiful and talented dancers. Photo by: Drew Chenelly

The Rockette's first official opening night at Radio City Music Hall was on December 27, 1932. It was described as the "hottest ticket in town" and more than 100,000 people requested admission for it, but only 6,200 got so lucky. At this point in time, they were first named the "Roxyettes"by Rothafel, and in 1934 were officially named the Radio City Rockettes. Photo by: Neil Heaney

The 60's were a time of social change, especially for women. The Rockettes continued to be role models for girls everywhere. They raised their kicks in their performances, and even the hemline in their skirts! They even appeared as astronauts, hula dancers and bull fighters in their performances, representing girl power! In the year 1978, Radio City almost faced a real downfall. Due to financial problems, it almost had to close down. Luckily, the Rockettes were willing to work harder to put together more performances in order to create more income and save the theater. In the 80's, the Rockettes were said to be the fittest women in America, so not only did they become more idolizing, but the competition to become a Rockette was even more intense. The Rockettes continued to perform their most popular Christmas Spectacular, but the Radio City Music Hall needed some fixing up. With all of the renovations, the dancers changed up their choreography and costumes, creating a whole new image for the performance. Everyone wanted to see it and ticket sales went through the roof. In 2001, the Rockettes were invited to perform at the white house, a major accomplishment for the dancers. Photo by: gchapman491
