Originally called the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, the Pittsburgh Pirates changed their name after signing the Philadelphia Athletics' second basemen Louis Bierbauer in a quick deal. The Athletics called the team "Pirates" as an insult, but the Pirates enjoyed the name so much they kept it. -
