Gymnastics' First Apperance in the Modern Olympics
In 1891, it was talked about that gymnastics would make it's debut in international competition but, that did not happen until a few years later.

Women started competing

Floor
Floor exercise was not included into the sport until 1932. The floor exercise for men was the same for women, a spring floor with rubber foam and plywood combination in order to make the floor bouncy enough to do tricks. Women could not compete in this exercise until 1948.

Balance Beam
Balance beam is in the women competition. It's a 5 inch wooden beam used for tricks, leaps etc. Usually for starting a routine you start on the ground using a vault or a jump to mount the beam and perform their peace. Women won their first individual metals on this apparatus.

Bars
There are two different kinds of bars, parallel bars and uneven bars. Parallel bars are men apparatus' and uneven bars are women apparatus'. The uneven bars are steel and parallel bars are normally wooden. 1952 is when these were included in the Olympics.

Vault
Vault a section where both men and women are able to compete. 1952 it was incorporated into the Olympic games. It is known for being very dangerous.

First Perfect 10's
For the first in history a young girl named Nadia Comaneci was the first gymnast to get perfect 10's. Two on beam, on uneven bars and one on floor. This happened at the Olympic games in Montreal in 1962.

Olga Korbut & Popularity
In 1970's gymnastic skyrocketed and was a very popular sport to watch on TV. In 1972, Olga Korbut a gymnast from the Soviet Union was the gymnast to watch in the Olympics. By winning metals in two apparatus' her team got the gold.

Rhythmic Gymnastics
In 1964 rhythmic gymnastics became recognized a legal competition BUT, was not an Olympic event until 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Dominique Dawes
Dominique Dawes changed the game for African American gymnasts. After an injury of a fellow teammate, Dawes stepped in as an alternate. She became the first African American to win her very own metal.
