    First Set of Printed Rules and Uniforms For NYPD

    The first set of printed rules and regulations was issued to the police force in 1845. In 1853, full uniforms were adopted to the force.
  • Creation of the New York City Police Department

    On May 23, 1845 Mayor William Havemeyer repealed the previously used night watch system to pass the Municipal Police Act, creating the New York City Police Department.

    Violent Crime Increases During Civil War

    During the Civil War, dating from 1861 to 1865, violent crime increased in New York City. A police insurance fund was established in 1864 to guarantee financial security to the families of police officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

    Theodore Roosevelt Appointed as President of NYPD Police Commision
    In 1895, future president Theodore Roosevelt was appointed as the President of the NYPD Police Commission. In Roosevelts' time as President he focused on getting rid of corrupt police officers and bribery as well as conducting "midnight rambles" to make sure that the cops on duty were making their rounds.

    In 1898, NYPD absorbed 18 smaller police agencies and later began to use plain clothes police officers for the first time.

  • First African American Officer

    First African American Officer
    In 1911, the NYPD hired Samuel Battle as it's first ever African American officer. Battle went on to become the first African American sergeant and lieutenant, and retired after 30 years on the job.
  • Isabella Goodwin Becomes First Female Detective in NYPD History

    Isabella Goodwin Becomes First Female Detective in NYPD History
    Previous to Goodwin being appointed the first detective in NYPD history, women were hired only as "matrons", technically not actual police officers. Goodwin became the first woman to break this barrier after solving a case in 1912 that 60 other detectives could not figure out, leading to her appointment as a detective and given the rank of 1st grade lieutenant.

    In 1961, Mario Biaggi, who would later become a US Congressmen, becomes the first officer from New York State to be inducted into the National Police Officers Hall of Fame.

    9/11 Terrorrist Attacks
    During the September 11th attacks in 2001, 23 NYPD officers lost their lives. The amount of NYPD officer lives lost was the most in the police departments history during the year of 9/11. The NYPD Counter-Terrorism Bureau was founded in 2002 as a result of the terrorist attacks.

    NYPD Makes Largest Gang Bust in NY History
    On June 4, 2014, NYPD arrested 103 members of gangs in what was the largest gang bust in New York history. 95 of the 103 people arrested took plea deals.
  • NYPD Ends Law Enforcement of Previous Marijuana Crimes

    In 2021, the NYPD ended the department's law enforcement of previous marijuana crimes other than driving under the influence.
