DNS is Established
Domain Name System is established and has address extensions like .com, .org, and .edu. It was made by four UC Berkeley students—Douglas Terry, Mark Painter, David Riggle, and Songnian Zhou. -
NSFNet Created
The National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) was created to promote advanced education and research in the USA. It later developed into a major backbone of the Internet we use today. -
First Internet Worm Virus
One of the first worm viruses spread via the internet. It shut down about 10% of the internet. -
WWW is Established
WWW (World Wide Web) is created by Tim Berners-Lee. It was made at CERN, the European Physical Laboratory. -
ARPANET Ceases to Exist
ARPANET shuts down, and is replaced by NSFNet. -
Linux is Created
Linus Torvalds creates an Open Source OS called Linux. He then goes on to be a leader in Open Source developing -
WWW is Open to the Public
For the first time the WWW is open to the public and is available for anyone to use. This is the day Berners-Lee published a short summary of the World Wide Web, which marked its beginning. -

Blogs Became Popular
Blogs became more accesible to the public, as people were making websites allowing others to make blogs. An example is Open Diary. -
Beginnings of Google
Google opened their first office in Menlo Park, California. Google began as a university project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. -
Youtube is Launched
The video sharing website was created by three former paypal employees. One year later it was bought by Google, and still remains under Google today. -
92 Million Websites
2006 marked the milestone of 92 million webites. -
Google Chrome Release
Google releases their own Internet browser, called Google Chrome. It is free, and as of January 2015 51% of people use it as their prefered browser. -
Rise of Smartphones
In the US, 56% of Americans have a smartphone which can acess the internet. -
