History of the Internet

  • First Prototype

    First Prototype
First working prototype is created. ARPANET stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. This was one of the first packet switching network and the first network to use protocol suite TCP/IP. These technologies became the foundation of the Internet.
  • Packet Switching

    Packet Switching
This uses packet switching which allows multiple computers to communicate on a single network. This describes a specific network where small units of data (known as packets) are routed through a network which is based on the address in each packet.
  • Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol

Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol
Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). This is a model that sets standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. TCP is mainly used for data delivery of a packet. IP is used for the logical addressing.
  • Network E-mail

    Network E-mail
Raymond Samuel Tomlinson was an American computer programmer. He implemented the first email program on the ARPANET system. He is internationally known and credited as the inventor of email.
  • First Internet Address Registry

    First Internet Address Registry
Jon Postel Helps Create First Internet Address Registry. This later develops into Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). This regulates internet functions.
  • Global Networking

    Global Networking
The start of Global networking. The University College of London and Royal Radar Establishment in Norway connect to ARPANET. The term 'internet' is coined.
  • Internet Service Provider & Telenet

    Internet Service Provider & Telenet
The first Internet Service Provider is created, along with the commercialised version of ARPANET, known as Telenet. Telenet was an American made. This is a commercial packet switched network. It was the first packet-switched network service that was available to the public
  • Key Internet Protocols Implemented

    Key Internet Protocols Implemented
Dr. David Clark installs Internet protocols for the Multics systems. Dr. David Clark was a computer scientist who has been involved with Internet developments since the mid-1970s. He works as a Senior Research Scientist at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
  • World Wide Web Prototype & ENQUIRE Project

World Wide Web Prototype & ENQUIRE Project
    • World Wide Web prototype begins as CERN
    • Project called ENQUIRE initiated by British scientist Tim Berners Lee
  • World Wide Web & Archie

    World Wide Web & Archie
    • Computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web
    • Archie is developed by McGill University student Alan Emtage
  • Hyper Text Markup Language

    Hyper Text Markup Language
Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN, develops HyperText Markup Language (HTML). The language consists of special codes or tags, and these determine a page's appearance when read by a Web browser. This is the standard language for making web pages.
  • Gopher

Gopher which is a point-and-click navigation is created by the University of Minnesota. Gopher was the most popular interface for several years. This was mainly designed for distributing and searching for documents over the Internet.
  • Line Mode Browser

    Line Mode Browser
The line mode browser launches. This was the first web browser that had a cross platform codebase, which meant that it could be installed on many types of computers. It was a simple piece of technology, but since this was created in the earlier years, it was good for displaying the abilities of this new creation.
  • Audio & Video

    Audio & Video
Approximately one million hosts have access to the internet over 'MBONE'. The first audio and video are broadcast over over a portion of the Internet known as the 'MBONE.'
  • Public World Wide Web & Mosiac

Public World Wide Web & Mosiac
CERN puts the World Wide Web in the public domain for the world. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) releases web browser Mosiac. The browser was named after its support of multiple internet protocols.
  • Yahoo!

    Yahoo!
Yahoo! Is created by Stanford University by Jerry Yang and David Filo. They are headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. The creators, Jerry Yang and David Filo are candidates in Electrical Engineering.
  • Internet Traffic Records

    Internet Traffic Records
Internet Traffic Records are broken. This is due to the release of images taken by Pathfinder on Mars that the NASA website streams . This generates 46 million hits in a day.
  • Google Search

    Google Search
The Google search engine is created. Google has become the most widely used search engine. The company was launched by Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
  • Launch of Youtube

    Launch of Youtube
YouTube.com is created. YouTube is an American made Video-sharing website. This was created by former PayPal employees. They are Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in 2005.
  • Edward Snowden

    Edward Snowden
Edward Snowden, tells the public about the monitoring program that the NSA had in place. This had the ability to tap into the communications of people. He has been charged in the US with theft of government property.
  • Google Assistant

    Google Assistant
Google unveils Google Assistant, a voice-activated personal assistant program. Google Assistant has the ability to search the internet, schedule events, set alarms, and show information from the Google account of the user. This is an extension of Google Now, designed to the users personal account.
