History of the Internet
-
First Social Interaction through Networking
J. C. R. Licklider wrote a series of memos through networking describing his "Galactic Network" concept. He saw a future of interconnected computers through which people could easily access data and programs from anywhere. -
First book on Packet Switching Theory
Leonard Kleinrock convinces colleagues that packets rather than circuits would be more feasible in computer networking. -
First Wide-Area Computer Network
Thomas Merril and Lawrence G. Roberts connected TX-2 computer in Mass. to the Q-32 in California using a low speed dial telephone line. The experiment gave them the realization that computers could work well together, running programs, getting data, etc. -
IMP's are Created
DARPA and Lawrence Roberts had a almost complete ARPANET
blueprint structure. They developed what could be the most important piece which were the packet swithces, or Interface Message Processors. -
First Host Computer
ARPANET had been created, and at UCLA the Network Measurment Center was selected to be the first node of ARPANET. BBN installed the first IMP into a computer and thus the first host computer was created. -
The First Host-to-Host Message
SRI was connected to ARPANET, and the first mesage was sent from Kleinrock to SRI. Following this two more nodes were added and by the end of 1969 four host computers we functioning into ARPANET, and Internet was born. -
First Email
The software for the email was wrote in it's basics by Ray Thomlinson. Lawrence Roberts expanded the software by creating the ability to list, read, file, forward and respond to messages. Email was th egreatest network application of over a decade, aswell as a start of the World WIde Web we see today. -
First Large Scale Demonstration of ARPANET
Mr. Kahn organized the demonstration of ARPANET at the International Computer Communication Conference (ICCC). -
First Online Service
Compu Serve and The Source were the first online service created for personal use computers. Allowed for email, chat, stock and financial information, different forums as well as general information. -
Transition from NCP to TCP/IP
The computer community had planned a big switch over that required converting all hosts simultaneously. After the transition they distrobuted buttons saying "I survived the TCP/IP transition. -
The World
The World was the first Internet Service Provider (ISPs) for commercial use. The World was stationed in Brookline, Massachussets -
Archie
Very first search engine that was publicly used. It was a tool for indexing FTP files, allowing people to find specific files. -
World Wide Web
Internet is publicly debuted as a service. A NeXT computer was used to run the first web server, and thus write the first web browser, World WIde Web. -
NCSA Mosaic
First web browser that was used on a wide scale. Was installed into personal computers very easily thus widely used. Was the first web browser to show images in a seperate window. -
Yahoo!
Yahoo! is a search engine still popular today that was created by David Filo and Jerry Yang. It allowed a man-made description with each url. -
Google
Google is created in 1996 but is released 1998. It's currently the most popular search engine and continues to be due to its link safety and trustworthiness. -
Paypal
First started in 1998 as a company that developed security software for handheld devices. In 1999 it was launched as a money transfering service. In 2001, X.com was terminated to focus on Paypal by Musk, and developed the program we know today. -
Myspace
Founded by Chirs DeWolfe and Tom Anderson. Wildley popularized and beomes the greatest social network of the time. -
Facebook
Mark Zuckerburg launch tthis socail networking service that we know today as the second most popular website after google.com. Fun fact: Facebook being a multi-billion dollar Corporation only has about 9000 employees that work to monitor, improve, etc. -
Youtube
Youtube becomes a website where media content can be publish and viewed by others. Today, one of the most popular websites. It was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim
