    During the Cold War, scientists used the internet to communicate. Back then, computers filled up entire rooms. If one computer broke down, the others wouldn't follow. This was important because it assisted with the needs and commands of the Cold War

    J.C.R Licklider suggested the idea of a network of computers who could talk to each other.
  • The First Message Sent

    The First Message Sent
    In 1969, the first ever message was sent from one computer to another. It was sent over the ARPANET. ARPANET stands form Advanced Research Projects Agency. One computer was in a lab in UCLA, and another in Stanford.The message read 'Login', and Stanford received the first two letters; 'Lo'. It didn't fail to crash the network. By the end on 1969, only four computors were connected to this network.

    Various Networks Added
    The University of Hawaii's Aloha Network joined the network, shorty followed by Networks in London and Norway two years later. Ray Tomlinson was also developing a system to send mail back and fourth between the users of ARPANET, which would in future be known as 'electronic mail', or for short, email.

    Vinton Serf allowed computers to connect together in a virtual space. This was known as Transmission Control Protocol or TCP. This was also called Internet Protocal or IP.

    Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Instead of being a data sharing space for scientists, instead this was an entire network accessible to anyone with an internet connection where they could find information.

    In 1992, Erwise was invented. Erwise was the first internet browser to have a graphical interface.

    In the early 90's, companies such as AOL and CompuServe began providing internet access. Dial up was a method where you would connect to the internet with a telephone line. The telephone line was connected to a modem and the other end was plugged into a phone jack. There also was a time where you couldn't use the phone and the internet at the same time

    After Mosaic was created in 1993, surfing the web became popular. Mosaic was important because it influenced a lot of browsers in future such as Netscape Navigator.

    Netscape Navigator became extremely popular. It had 90% of web usage.

    The internet allows us to do lots of things, and without it, we couldn't access information as quick as we can, to communicate with people in other countries. With the internet we can educate those who might not be able to. The first thing ever ordered off the internet was a pizza from a Pizza Hut in 1994.

    The Winklevoss Twins sued Mark Zuckerberg for copying their idea. The sued him for $65 million, and said that Zuckerberg stole their 'ConnectU' idea to create the Facebook.
