The ARPANET was created by the US military as a failsafe in case the USSR destroyed all their information that is only stored on one computer. The idea was to share the information btween multiple computers as a back-up. While it was never needed for its orginal purpose it did lead to the Internet in a way. -

invented by Ray Tominson made a private message system that would be call electronic Mail/email. He was able to do this using the ARPANET system in order to share the information/messages over computers. -
international packet switched service
A collaboration between the general post office in the UK and the western union international and tymnet in the USA would build a internation shared network. It worked by each company sending packets of information to each other in order to comunicate or send data much faster than the physical paper could arrive to its destination. -
newsgroups, bulletin boards
There was now a new use for computers where for the first time users would be able to learn of news and events in other countries or areas without having to wait for the papers or news to report it. These were mainly only downloadable and not a simple click and read that we experience now. -
TCP/IP protocol, National Science Foundations (NSF)
This would allow users of a computer to access various supercomputers in order to access more information than before.Super computers would be able to store more information than a normal one and so this made sharing information easier and faster as books no longer had to bought and found for research. -
Domain name addressing system
The reason why we dont have to remember binary and numbers for a site and instead keywords can be typed in to bring the user to a certain site. -

First commercial dialup
The first serious commercial dialup services, offered by CompuServe, Prodigy and America Online were made available in 1995. By the end of 1996, there were an estimated 14 million US households using dialup services for online access. By the end of 1998, the United States had more than 75 million users online, with the overwhelming majority utilizing dialup service as their main source of Internet connection. -

The world wide web is a network of interlinked pages with information, videos and audio regarding anything that has been uploaded to date. -

created by Alan Emtage a university student in montreal. It was a script based search engine meaning it had various protocols for searching the web and thus would significantly longer than ones we have today. Archie is still running today... -

The first web browser called netscape was created by Marc Andressen and Jim Clark. Their company then went on and pioneered many of the features of a modern Internet company. -

The new word internet was now used as a daily word, this is similar to tweets being used in todays worlds as a modern reference. People also knew that it was a reference to the networka and not a reference to the netting in swimming shorts. -

Mark Zuckerberg created a social network site for his college that would allow people to connect (as well as see girls pictures and interest) which to date has over one billion users and an estimated 14 million deceased users. -

In 2005 an online site which allowed members to upload videos would become one of the most used and popular sites on the internet. Its main domiance due to the fact that non-members could visit and use the site. The first video uploaded was off an elephant at a zoo. -

Twitter created by Jack Dorsey allows users to express their opinion on current events in 140 charaters or less with a picture/site link. Where as facebook allows users to comunicate btween friends the whole world could see what someone has tweeted with a simple hashtag #worldwide. -
