In 1956 they first introduced the radio transmitting helmet to better communication between the coaches and the players. The radio helmet was quickly outlawed in the N.F.L within the same year because players and N.F.L officials thought that it was unfair. -

Shortly after the radio transmitter helmet was created in 1956 the single bar face mask was introduced on helmets a few months after. Since the first single bar face mask was created the N.F.L has used it ever since because of the plastic helmets it greatly reduced the amount of face injuries. -

In 1971 air bladders were invented for added protection. These air bladders fit inside of the helmet like a liner and they reduced the chance of concussions compared to the other helmets by almost 50%. -

1975 the first full face masks are used on players in the N.F.L mostly by linemen or line backers because of how rough their positions are. -
The First Protective Visor For Helmets
1984 was the first appreance of the visor for a football helmets. The visor was made out of a strong clear plastic and was used to protect the face from hands or weather. -
The First Poly-carbonate Helmet Is Created
In 1986 the first poly-carbonate helmet was created and ever since nearly every company that produces helmets created with poly-carbonate. The helmets were nearly 2 times stronger than the original plastic helmet. -
Face Masks Are Made a Requirement By The N.F.L
In 1998 face-masks were made a requirement by the N.F.L because the helmets were to hard and if the players were hit in the face they would sustain major injuries. -
Single Bar Face Masks Outlawed By N.F.L
In 2004 the single bar face masks were officially banned by the N.F.L and only full masks can be used from then on. -
