Most of the original baitcasting reels were made will brass or iron gears. Since the baitcasting reel is a free spooling reel often times you would get knots or backlashes in your reel when casting. -
A lighter Fly Fishing Reel
Charles F. Orvis introduced a lighter fly fishing reel. He used lighter metals which allowed for the spooled line to dry faster than the original solid design. -
Conventional fishing reel
It is similar to the baitcasting reel. It is hard to cast this reel so the line is dropped behind the boat and trolled. -
First Fixed Spool Reel
The English later introduced a more modern day reel design in 1905. The new reel has a fixed spool that spins around allowing the angler to retieve their line faster. -
Spincast reel
The spincast reel was first made by the company Zebco. The company designed the concepts of the baitcasting reel and the spinning reel to make the spincast reel. -
The Centrepin Reel
The Centrepin reel has a pin in the center of the reel which allows for the spooled line to cast farther and get more line in the water from the momentum. The Centrepin reel is the original design for deep sea fishing reels and coastal fishing reels. -
New Baitcasting Reels
The newest models of baitcasting reels are made from stainless steel or other composite materials to make a lighter reel. They are also fitted with centrifugal brakes that can be adjusted. When you adjust the brake you get fewer backlashes but you also lose distance on your casts
