  • Physical therapy was invented.

    Physical therapy originated in China, Greece, Rome, Persia, and a few other places. the first professional group of physical therapists was founded by Per Henrik Ling the "Father of Swedish Gymnastics." other countries started to follow in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
  • The Term Sports medicine was first used

    sports medicine has been used before but the term "sports Medicine" was adopted in 1911. this is when things started to kick off with the history of sports medicine
  • A first attempt at National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

    the first attempt to make an association for athletic trainers happened at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. However only athletic trainers with teams in the competition were able to join
  • NATA was formed

    200 athletic trainers met in Kansas City to discuss the future of athletic training. NATA has set a standard for sports med professionalism, education, certification, research, and practice areas. NATA has played a huge part in giving recognition to athletic trainers.
  • the American college of sports med was founded.

    The American College of Sports Medicine was founded as the "Federation of Sports Medicine." it was originally an afternoon program of the American Association of Health. 11 people were named its founders
  • Certification Examination

    NATA's Professional Advancement Committee put forth the development of certification examination for athletic trainers
  • Lindsy McLean's Article

    Lindsy McLean made an article named "Does the National Athletic Trainers Association Need a Certification Examination." this article pointed out reasons that NATA should continue with the development of a certification examination for athletic trainers
  • First edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Graded Exercise Testing and Exercise Prescription published

    The first edition of ACSM's guidelines was published in 1975 and it is still the most widely used set of guidelines for sports medical professionals.
  • Using Ice to treat injuries Became popular

    Dr Gabe Mirkin coined the term R.I.C.E which meant rest ice compression and elevation. The reason for using ice was to accelerate healing. this is when using ice became popular to treat injuries
  • The International Sports Sciences Association was founded

    Dr. Sal Arria and Dr.Freadrick Hatfield created a personal fitness training program. the purpose was to merge gym experiences with practical and applied sciences. it was founded in a headquarters in Phoenix Arizona
  • ACSM Team Physician Course launches

    ACSM made a sports medicine course to educate people. it was designed for primary care like caring for patients and athletes on the field.
  • Sports medicine was approved and recognized

    sports medicine was approved as a subspeciality under the American Board of Emergency Medicine. this helps with awareness about athletic injuries and how they are evolving
  • Sports Prosthetics were invented.

    Van Phillips came up with the idea of making prosthetics for athletes by studying animals and how they move. he studied how to mimic human bones and he created the first prosthetic in 1995.
  • The Head and Neck Support Device

    The head and Neck Support device is used by F1 drivers. this device was made to keep racers safe in case of a collision on the track and to keep drivers safe
  • Zackery Lystedt law was passed

    the Zackery Lystedt Law protects young athletes from returning to a game when they are not healthy. this law was passed to ensure that young athletes weren't getting pushed to play when they weren't able to.
  • NFL established a concussion protocol

    the NFL introduced the concussion protocol when i player has a concussion. Their goal was to make sure players were getting the most up-to-date medical procedures and to keep players safe.
  • COVID Protocols

    in 2020 there was a global pandemic. pro sports continued to be played however and there was a COVID-19 protocol that didn't allow players with COVID-19 to play and fans could not be in attendance.
