The game was spread around Canada through Scotish and Irish imagrants. The players adopted the elements of field hockey. They began adding there own elements and rules like the addition of face-offs. -
First Organized Ice Hockey Game
The first game took place in Montreal. The game was between a group of McGill University students. The rules were similar to the rules of a field hockey game. -

When teams from the west moved east to play games they brought along their own rules and elements. -
Three Periods
The game of ice hockey changed from two halves of 30 minutes to three thirds of 20 minutes. -

The National Hockey Association introduces penalties into the game of ice hockey. -

Blue lines where introduced and divided the the ice into three zones, attacking, neurtal and deffensive. Blue lines also saw the adoption of offsides. -
First Goalie Mask is Worn and Numbers are Introduced
Clint Benedict made history when he wore the first goalie mask during a game. The same year players were required to wear a number on the back of their jersey. -
Zamboni is Invented
The first ice rusurfiacer was created by Frank J. Zamboni. Frank was able to maintain his rink better and offered a higher quality sheet of ice making the game of hockey faster. -
Helmets
A new requirment was introduced in hockey's biggest league. Players would from then on have to wear helmets. Although this was a requirment some players had been wearing them since the early 1920's. -
Hockey is a National Sport in Canada
Canada names ice hockey as their official winter sport. -
Canada wins Gold at Winter Olympics
Canada wins gold for the first time in 50 years. The team was was lead by NHL stars. Canada deafted the USA 5-2 to take gold home.This win stabalized Canada's reputation of domination in International ice hockey,
