American School for the Deaf

Founded in Harvard, Connecticut around 1817, this was the first school to feature a special education program in the western world. Its significance spans even to today. This school also set the groundwork for how to teach students with disabilities. -
Columbia Institution
The Columbia Institution was the first school among many to be able to give degrees to those with disabilities. This is the catalyst in having people accept the capabilities of those with natural barriers. This also exemplifies major strides in the acceptance of those with disabilities. -
Beattie V. Board of Education
This case was extremely important in the regulation of treating children with disabilities. The case was made against a school that expelled a child for drooling and facial abnormalities that "nauseated" the educators and students in generalized. This case helped immensely with preventing the mistreatment of those with actions they cannot control. -
Council for Exceptional Children
One of the first organizations that advocated for children with disabilities is formed. The group was formed at Columbia University in New York around the timeframe of 1922. They have been helping children receive equal opportunity since then. -
The Bradly Home
The Bradly Home was the first psychiatric hospital founded for children. It posed to help those children who cannot help themselves and had no where to turn to. It was founded in Providence, Rhode Island around 1931 in order to help with this important issue also bringing many children who were mistreated in generalized classrooms. -
NARC
On October 10th, 1950, the National Association for Retarded Citizens was formed between 23 advocacy groups during the fall. This organization was made to create a balance between those with disabilities and those who are in the judicial system. It was important in order to bring about fairness when the whole system did not support those who were naturally disadvantaged. -
Brown V. Board of Education

Although not directly related to children with disabilities, this event showed those who did not have a lot to fight for what they needed no matter the cost. This court case sent echoes through society in an amazing way, having almost the whole fabric of society change. Those with disabilities saw this a major win for those without power or resources. -
Section 504
Section 504 is an important part of the Rehabilitation Act that prevents the discrimination of children with disabilities. This act was instrumental in the equal treatment of children with disabilities especially in generalized classrooms. It also helped to create better education programs for the future. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed by George W. Bush on July 26th, 1990. This act ensured that those with disabilities are to be treated fairly and equally under the law as well as in the workplace. It also meant that those with disabilities felt more motivated to express themselves and try to be a part of society as a whole. -
No Child Left Behind Act
The No Child Left Behind Act enacted specific guidelines for educators to follow in order to have children learn a certain criteria for reading and math. This however, has been met with many criticisms including not being specific enough for those with special needs. All in all, it is seen as something that has helped education set a ground floor to work up from.
