    As a direct result of Geraldo Rivera exposing Willowbrooks disgusting conditions, it was established that all persons whether disabled or not are promised an equal education. This was very important to the advancement of special education as before this individuals with special needs or disabilities were almost shunned upon and were looked upon as a disgrace and were not treated with respect or dignity.

    Key case in the advancement of SES as it began a new plan of action so to speak for SES where the schools would need to incorporate a better plan an introduced the IEP's (Individualized Education Plan). IEP's were intended to be annual individualized and personalized for the success of the student and not generalized . Many people were against this because the associated stereotypes and stigmas of individuals with special needs.

    This court case was fundamental to the advancement because before it as with any case there were many loopholes- including nursing service It was seen as a medical issue and had to be provided by doctors. the state was against it because it would mean that now public schools were to be responsible for nursing care while at school rather than parents
