  • First Public School for People with Disabilities

    First Public School for People with Disabilities
    The first public school with disabilities was founded by Michael L'Epeé in 1760. He was a pioneer in the 18th century and he cared for the education of deaf and blind students. This set the stepping stone for other institutions to develop and start caring about the education for people with disabilities.
  • NARC - National Association for Retarded Children

    NARC - National Association for Retarded Children
    The National Association for Retarded Children was founded in 1950. This association started because of parents of children that had mental disabilities. They have been the voice for people with disabilities when it comes to the legislation and the state passing a bill. We see the timeline (https://thearc.org/about-us/history/ )of this association and how the name was changes to the "Arc" in 1981. This was due to the fact that "Retarted" is a diminishing term.
  • Brown V Board of Education

    Brown V Board of Education
    The Brown V Board Education (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRYK4RWyUAo)
    was a case that declared that it was unconstitutional for schools to be segregated. This stopped allowing "separate but equal schools". This segregation was going against the 14th amendment which stated liberty and equal protection for everyone.
  • ESEA - Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    ESEA - Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act provided access to high education for low income families. This act provided funding to schools so that students could get that high education they wouldn't be able to get otherwise. This act also provided free lunches and more teachers in those communities that needed it.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    The Rehabilitation Act (https://askearn.org/page/the-rehabilitation-act-of-1973-rehab-act) protected individuals against discrimination because of their disability. They also protected individuals from not being hired due to their disability, so this act didn't allow someone to have any employment discrimination. Another big section of this act was that if an organization got federal fundings, they can't deny any benefits to people with disabilities.
  • EAHCA - The Education For All Handicapped Children Act

    EAHCA - The Education For All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education For All Handicapped Children Act provided free public education for children from ages 5 to 18. This law also required to have individualized education programs. This was a way to provide education for kids with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. This was later named IDEA - The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

    The IEP was a program created for kids with disabilities to have that support that they need for when it comes to learning. This is a plan that every teacher has to develop and this is required by law. In summary, this program created a plan for students and it gives them the services they need to be able to succeed and meet their needs.

    ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act
    Americans with Disabilities Act is a law that doesn't allow any discrimination towards people that have disabilities. This act intended to make everything accessible and for them not to feel excluded just because they have a disability. This was to allow people with disabilities to be able to live everyday life with no problems and in a more inclusive environment.
  • IDEIA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    IDEIA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
    IDEIA included that students need to be placed in the least restrictive environment that they can having in mind their needs. This act also provided advocacy for those students with no guardians. Another important guideline was to use people-first language, meaning to not refer to someone by their disability.
  • ESSA - Every Student Succeeds Act

    ESSA - Every Student Succeeds Act
    Every Student Succeeds Act was to provide quality education to all. This replaced the NCLB and it reauthorized the ESEA. This act includes a lot of the same items as the No Child Left Behind Act but it gives opportunities to children that aren't making progress.
