First School of Special Education
The first school of special education was opened on January 1, 1817 in Hartford, Connecticut. The school was named the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, now known as American School for the Deaf. The school was established by Gallaudet. -
Council for Exceptional Students
The CEC was established by a group of administrators in 1922, and was named the International Council for the Education of Exceptional Children. The name was then changed to Council for Exceptional Children in 1958. The CEC strives to meet the needs of those with disabilities and those with gifts and special talents. -
Brown V. Board of Education
A court case that was Plessy v. Ferguson saying that “Separate is not equal”. This case encouraged the formation of many advocacy groups to inform the public of need of special education programs. This court case brought a lot of attention to black v. white's in school and special need students v. general education.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was passed by the 89th United States Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1965. ESEA did not make it law to educate students with disabilities but it did give grants to state school sand institutions that put into place programs to educate students with disabilities. The act has been the most far-reaching ever to been passed by the United States Congress. -
Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act allows protection from discrimination of special needs and disabilities. Tis law is considered the first law giving protection to students with special needs. This law includes FAPE and LRE. Students are eligible when they have either a physical or mental disability that inhibits their learning experience. -
Least Restrictive Environment
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) means that with a student’s IEP , they must also be in as many regular education classes as possible. This ensures that the student has social experiences. In LRE classrooms paras and aids are usually required.This means they should spend as much time as possible with peers who do not receive special education. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act 94-142 was enacted by the United States Congress in 1975. The act was created to require all public schools accepting the federal funds to provide equal access to education. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Originally known as the Education of Handicapped Children Act, passed in 1975. It is a four-part piece of American legislation that ensures students with a disability to be provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Congress reauthorized the IDEA in 2004 and most recently amended the IDEA through Public Law 114-95, the Every Student Succeeds Act, in December 2015. -
Assistive Technology devices
It is any device,software, or equipment that helps people work around their challenges. Assistive Technology devices are designed to help students who have learning disabilities. Some examples of assistive technology are text-to-speech and word prediction. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
The act promises people with special needs will have the same rights as everybody elseThis act also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, the workplace, and everyday society such as public transportation The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush.
