The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA)
"No qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under" any program or activity that either receives Federal financial assistance or is conducted by any Executive agency or the United States Postal Service. -
Handicapped Children’s Protection Act
Students and parents have rights under EAHCA (now known as IDEA) and section 504. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
This act prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life -- to enjoy employment opportunities, to purchase goods and services, and to participate in State and local government programs and services. -
IDEA reauthorized
This legislation guarantees a free and appropriate public education for more than 5 million children with disabilities and prohibits states from eliminating educational services to students with disabilities under any circumstances. Students with disabilities are to be included in on state and district-wide assessments. Regular Education Teachers are now required to be a member of the IEP team. -
No Child Left Behind Act
Bill signed signed into law by President Bush. All students (including students with disabilities) must be proficient in math and reading by the year of 2014.
