Southern University Founded
Funds for the establishment of an institution of higher learning for African Americans were appropriated through the passage of ACT 87 of the Louisiana General Assembly. -
Southern Opens
Southern opened in New Orleans on Calliope Street. -
Relocation of Southern
Legislative Act 188 authorized Southern to move from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The University reponed in Baton Rouge on March 9, 1914. -

In the 50s, Business and Engineering were added to the existing divisions. The divisions were reorganized into the Colleges of Agriculture, Business Education, Engineering, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. -

During the 1960s, the College of Arts and Sciences was divided to create the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Sciences. -

Establishment of the Southern University System
The Southern University System, with its Board of Supervisors, was established. -

Enhancement of Southern
During the 1980s, Southern upgraded and constructed new facilities as well as established new academic programs using funds provided by the Consent Decree. -

During the 90s, Southern added and revamped several academic programs. Programs were accredited and facilities were added and renovated.
