  • Napster

    Napster was created originally as a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing service that primarily focused on sharing digital audio file encoded in MP3 format. Napster than ran into legal problems, mainly copyright infringement, and had to close down operations. Many other P2P file sharing sites would rise up and follow in the footsteps of Napster and some of them were shutdown. These sites would allow people to spread the music they love freely to their friends. Napster was only on the PC
  • LinkedIn

    LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking service that is primarily used for professional and school networking. This allows younger and older professionals who are in the same field to be able to communicate and connect. As of 2016, LinkedIn has over 433 million accounts and was recently purchased by Microsoft for $26.2 billion. LinkedIn was released primarily on PC, but later in 2008 with the advancement of mobile phones, they released an app.
  • MySpace

    Myspace between the time of 2005 to 2009 was the largest social networking site in the world and in 2006 was the most visited site surpassing Google. MySpace offered its users the ability to network with friends and strangers, make personal profiles, blogs and share photos, music and videos. Facebook in 2009 rose above MySpace's number of visitors. MySpace during the time it was the biggest was only based on PC because, like LinkedIn, the technology didn't allow mobile devices to do it.
  • FaceBook

    Facebook currently is the most popular social networking site in the world. Facebook was created as a social networking site for local college students that would eventually branch out to all college and high school students. As of 2006, anyone 13 or older could make a Facebook account. Facebook gives the users the ability to share whatever they want to share. Facebook is available on many different platforms including PC, tablet, mobile and laptop.
  • World of Warcraft

    World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG that had a peak amount of players at 12 million and it still is the most subscribed to MMORPG game. When playing the game, players have the ability to talk and help complete strangers complete quests, run dungeons and raids or just duel. Back when WoW released the community was very close knit because the games was not as complex as it is today. WoW is currently celebrating the launch of their newest expansion.
  • YouTube

    YouTube is a video-sharing site that anyone can upload a video that of course is appropriate for the general audience. YouTube is currently owned by Google. YouTube contains its own creators that have millions of subscribers and also businesses that use YouTube as another marketing device. YouTube allows people to post the videos they want to share on other social networks like Facebook and Twitter through YouTube so they can share the music, movies or YouTubers that the user likes.
  • Twitter

    Twitter is a micro-blogging social network that relies on short messages that have to contain only 140 characters. These short messages of Tweets are a very instant way to comment on something either happening in the world or just the users life. Twitter is mainly used via mobile phone because of the rapidity of the message. As of 2016, Twitter has more than 310 million active users.
  • Tumblr

    Tumblr, like Twitter, is a micro-blogging social networking site, but, unlike Twitter, Tumblr allows users to follow topics and people instead of just a person. Tumblr is known for the wide and avid use and posting of videos and images of fandoms. Tumblr is owned by Yahoo and has 312.2 million blogs. Tumblr is used across all platforms, but unlike Twitter the user is not confined to a certain amount of characters per post so the blogs can be longer.
  • Pinterest

    Pinterest is labeled as a photo sharing site, but Pinterest is much more than that. Pinterest primary draw is that users will post creations that range from decorations, food, art and costumes to share with the world. Some of the creations that are posted ave directions on how to create these things. The users has their own board so that their followers can see what the user tried or wants to try in the future. Brands have also moved in to inspire creation, but using their own brands,
  • Instagram

    Instagram is a photo-sharing and video-sharing social networking app that has the users take pictures or videos and post them not only on Instagram, but on the users Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, etc. The photos are taken in a square frame to mimic the Kodak Instamatic and the there are also many different filters to put over the photos. Instagram is owned by Facebook. Instagram was designed to be used for mobile phones, but can be viewed on the PC or laptop.
  • Snapchat

    Snapchat is a photo-sharing, video-sharing instant messenger, but the twist is that the photos, videos and messages will be deleted after being viewed by the receiver. There is a way to post photos and videos on the users story and they will last for 24 hours. Snapchat is a mobile only application and like Instagram has filters that the user can put over the messages. Some of these filters can brand sponsors as well. Photos received can also be screen captured by the receiver.
  • Candy Crush Saga

    Candy Crush Saga is a title game that is available on PC, mobile, tablet and on Facebook. Candy Crush uses the users Facebook friends to help the game move along if the user fails the puzzle. The user can post on Facebook how far they are and if they need help.
