    Friendster was launched as a dating site that included a custom profile, and it pioneered status updates. In 2003, a spike in its popularity saw millions of users join, leading to crashes in servers and an over-capacitation of the site for its developers. Myspace launched as a rival to Friendster and amassed over 25 million users at its peak in 2005. Public profiles including photos, music, and videos were customizable and made it the popular choice for teens and young adults.

    5.2- (2006) Originally Twitter was supposed to be a message-based tool to send from one person to another, however, Twitter soon began having rather large SMS bills, reframing Twitter to the Twitter we know today. This led them to win the “Break out of the Year,” Webby Award.

    5.5- (2017) Since the launch of Twitter back in 2006, a character limit on tweets had limited the number of characters a user was allowed to include in a tweet, that limit was 140 characters. In September of 2017, Twitter tried something new, which was doubling the character limit from 140 to 280. Along with this change, came the addition of threads, which are a series of Tweets that a user will keep replying to with the continuation of the original tweet making it a thread.

    5.4- (2010) Between September and October Twitter launched a new updated version called “New Twitter.” This version would allow users to tweet pictures, and videos, interact with links directly from a tweet, being able to mention other users in your tweet, and the ability to reply to and retweet a tweet. Pinterest grows steadily, raises a few rounds of money, releases mobile apps, and makes policy changes to better accommodate concerns

It also begins experimenting with monetization, beginning with Promoted Pins and improves support for businesses using Pinterest by launching an analytics dashboard.     Spiegel and Murphy forces Reggie Brown out of the company, thus resulting in Spiegel and Murphy re-incorporating Picaboo into Snapchat. Shortly after deciding to let Brown go, Snapchat caught the attention of Barry Eggers. A managing director at the venture capital firm Lightspeed ventures, Eggers learned about Snapchat through his teenage daughter. Thus prompting Eggers to pursue Snapchat and agreeing to invest $485,000 into the company.

    In early Jan. of 2013, Snapchat creators refined their app by launching a new feature, which allowed its users to edit their photos by using a drawing tool and eraser. In addition, Snapchat also launched video sharing capabilities on their Android App after ten days of quietly testing a beta. By October of 2013, Snapchat stories were introduced. Snapchat stories allowed users to post their daily life activities to all of their friends and family instead of having to send them individually.

    On January 9th, Snapchat released an update that allowed users to opt-out of its feature "Finds Friends". Later that month on the 21st Snapchat introduced "Snap-tchas" to combat spam and improve the security of the overall App. However, users found various ways to work around the security patch that was released. This break in the security patch resulted in many fruit smoothie pictures being spammed across the platform.

    Snapchat acquired a software company named "AddLive". In May, Snapchat introduced "Chat", which still allowed users to receive messages that disappeared. In addition, users could see when their friend was "here" in the chat window so users could start a live video chat. "Our Story" made its debut in June, offering users around the world to contribute photos and videos to a public feed of snaps from popular events.

    In January, Snapchat offered new ways for its advertisers to earn money from its huge audience. During this same month, Snapchat introduced Discover. Discover offered a new page easily accessible from the Snapchat home screen that featured short-form content from many different publishers and channels. BuzzFeed, CNN, Vox, and many more were featured.

    In March Snapchat acquired Bit strips, a company that specializes in making bitmojis (personalized emojis). That same month, Snapchat announced "Snapstreaks" in its "Chat 2.0" App update. In July, Snapchat announced "Memories" this feature allowed users to take a picture and save it for later. Lastly, in September, Snapchat rebranded itself to Snap Inc.
