    The Romans

    The Romans
    In 43 BC the Romans came to Britain. There, they had a difficult time and they fought a war against the Scots for four years. Later, they decided to build two walls to stop the Scots coming into England: the Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine’s Wall. Finally, the Romans left Britain in the 5th century.

    William Wallace

    William Wallace
    In the 14th century, Edward I wanted to become the king of Scotland because there was no king there. Wallace didn’t accepted him and he fought against the English army in the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Finally, he escaped into the mountains but the English found and killed him.

    Robert the Bruce

    Robert the Bruce
    He became king, less than a year after William Wallace’s death and the fight against the English continued. The king Edward I died and Bruce and his followers won back land from the English. In 1314, the large English army lost to a small number of Scots and Scotland was at last free from the English.
  • The Union of the Crowns

    The Union of the Crowns
    When Elizabeth I of England died with no children, James VI, the king of Scotland, succeeded to the English throne and became James VI of Scotland and I of England. The Act of Union between Scotland and England was signed in 1707, creating the United Kingdom of Britain. The Scottish Parliament was dissolved, and a single Parliament was created at Westminster in London.

    Scottish Parliament
    In 1999 a Scottish Parliament met for the first time for nearly 300 years. They weren’t able to decide everything for the Scots but they had a high autonomy. The actual Scottish Parliament was officially opened on October 9, 2004.
