The first state board of education was created. Horace Mann was made secretary of the board. Horace Man believed that the right kind of education would build individual character and as a result, reform society. He believed in the "egg crate" school. -
Woman's Profession as Mother and Educator
Catherine Beecher wrote this book and believed that giving women the right to vote as well as allowing them into all professions, would threaten the social institutions of the nation. She thought that women should be mothers and educators. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
THe result of this U.S Supreme Court Case was that schools for African Americans were to be "Separte but equal". -
Brown v. Board of Education
U.S. Supreme court threw out the "separte but equal" idea from the Plessy v. Ferguson case. It stated that segregated schools could not be made equal. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
U.S. Congress passed the Elementary and Secondary Eduaction Act that ensured that no person would be excluded from participation in any educational programs based on their sex.
